The Wade Edwards Learning Lab is the principal project of the Wade Edwards Foundation.  The Foundation was established to honor the life and spirit of Wade Edwards by supporting in other young people the pursuit of the virtues of determination, responsibility, honor and charity.  The Learning Lab exists primarily to support and encourage the efforts of high school students striving to meet high academic standards.  For these reasons, and out of consideration for our business and residential neighbors, it is necessary that the Learning Lab maintain a quiet working environment.  Therefore, we ask that members of the Learning Lab’s community conduct themselves with dignity, self-respect and self control and that that they adhere strictly to the following rules (over)

§  Student pickup is in the back parking lot OR across the street in the Broughton parking lot.  Students may not loiter (“hangout”) in the lobby or on the front steps.

o    Refrain from rowdiness and horseplay, keeping hands and feet to themselves in and around the facility. This includes: public displays of affection and fighting--playful or otherwise.  Fletcher Park is located down the street across from Broughton’s back parking lot should you feel the need to romp, frolic or play.

o    Not use the computer lab to play games, to participate in chat rooms, to receive instant messaging, to view inappropriate websites, including those with offensive lyrics or pictures, or to create or read inappropriate email. ACADEMIC USE ONLY.

i   Smoking is not allowed in or around the building

i   Students cannot make outgoing calls from WELL phones.  Consequently, they must often use pay phones to contact parents and guardians.  Be sure to have sufficient money to contact parents, etc. when necessary.

Failure to obey the rules will result in loss of privileges and removal from the building.

For Parents and Guardians

You can do much to help the WELL staff achieve its goal of providing your children a productive academic working environment by working with them and with us.  We ask the following of you:

1.        Review the information your student has provided to ensure its accuracy.

2.        We broadcast live pictures from the WELL on the Internet.  To see what your student may be up to, check out www.wade.org and follow the appropriate links.

3.        Review the WEL rules with your student and reinforce the importance of abiding by them.

4.        If you plan to pick up your student from the WELL after your workday, devise an alternate plan in case he or she finishes working early or in case it should be necessary for him or her to leave the building.

5.        Students can not make outgoing calls from WELL phones. Consequently, they must often use pay phones to contact parents and guardians.  Help them by ensuring that they have sufficient money to contact you when necessary.

6.        When dropping off or picking up your students, please drive to the REAR parking lot to lessen congestion in front of the building.

7.        When picking your students up, PLEASE DO NOT HONK for them: 1) they cannot always hear you honk; 2) it creates a stir in the building and disrupts the working environment; 3) it disturbs the neighboring residents and businesses.

8.        Occasionally the media asks to interview students at the WELL.  Do you give permission for such interviews? _____ Do you give permissions for video or photographs? ______

9.        Parent volunteers are always welcome, whether for one hour or on a regular basis.  We particularly need help monitoring the lobby and the study hall.  You could make a significant contribution to the lives of your students and their friends.  Any parent who would like to volunteer some time at the WELL should contact Steven at (919) 856-9355.

I have read the WELL Rules carefully and agree to abide by them.
