ONLINE GRIEF RESOURCES

"The Internet is becoming a new dimension, a new realm where the self-help movement can blossom," said John Suler, a clinical psychologist and professor at Rider College in Lawrenceville, N.J., who specializes in group behavior on the Internet. "Pages like [The TWA Flight 800 Message Board] follow a lot of the principles of group dynamics but in a virtual medium in the sense there is no face-to-face encounter. It also stretches the boundaries of time. For the group to survive, you don't have to all be at the same place, at the same time." Washington Post, October 1, 1996. A computer with a modem can be a connection for support. There are several different kinds of on-line resources. Some of the resources are more static (you just read them); some more interactive (you can express yourself and get response). Some are general; some are extremely specialized. The kinds of support you can find are:

Bulletin Boards - These are sites where "discussion" takes place. They contain a series of messages and responses posted on a public internet "bulletin board" by people from around the world. You do not ever need to post a message of your own. You can simply read the messages posted by others. If you want to post a message, the instructions are usually on the screen. Your message will not immediately appear, so do not expect it to. You may receive responses to your post either by private e-mail or by a public posting on that bulletin board. The participants are generally other bereaved people.

Information Web Sites - These are sites maintained by a person or a group; the sites contain information that you might find useful on a variety of grieving issues. Some information sites operate discussion bulletin boards; some offer e-mail lists you can join; some are merely informative. Almost all information web sites offer what are called "links" to other grief support sites on the web. A "link" is a quick way of connecting to another internet location, without typing in the internet address. You can click your mouse on the "link" and automatically be taken to the described web site.

Memorial Sites - These are on-line memorials. Pictures of those who have died and/or the stories of their lives and deaths are available to the public. Many of the sites invite you to place information in the memorial about someone you love who has died. A few sites charge for this on-line memorial, but most do not. The sites often offer the opportunity to write a message to the person who placed the memorial.

Individual Web Pages - These are generally set up by a parent to memorialize their child. Some are more extensive, with information and "links" to other sites; some include on-line memorials for others.

E-mail Groups - An e-mail list is a support group that communicates through group e-mail. You "subscribe" or join an e-mail list, and e-mail generated by members of the group is automatically received by you in your e-mail box. You can respond to mail individually or to the entire group (a few require that you respond to the whole group). These lists are free of charge. You can join as many as you like. You can also "unsubscribe" for a period if you are going to be away from your computer and do not want the mail to build up. The flow of mail in each group varies at different times and for different groups. The heaviest mail volume at the holidays.

"Chat Rooms" - These are on-line sites where a typed contemporaneous conversation between people across the nation can occur. You type in your contribution to the conversation and the other people "in the chat room" at that time can see what you have typed and can respond immediately.

BULLETIN BOARDS - the internet URL or "address" follows each description. You type the URL under the "find," "keyword," or "address" feature in your Internet browser, and you will be taken to the bulletin board.

Alt.support.grief newsgroup
This is a newsgroup or Usenet group where bereaved persons share experiences, coping techniques, and sympathy. It was set up in December 1994 by Cendra Lynn, who administers GriefNet, another resource.  It is an active bulletin board. There is an instruction sheet or "FAQ," which means "frequently asked questions," but most of the guidelines are common-sense. Anyone can post anything, so there are occasional inappropriate postings like money-making schemes. By and large the posting on alt.support.grief are on topic and supportive. There are also other newsgroups related to grief, such as soc.support.depression.crisis, alt.support.depression, soc.support.depression.misc., alt.life.afterlife, alt.consciousness.near-death-exp, and alt.obituaries, but there are more off-topic postings on these newsgroups.

Grief and Healing Discussion Group - run by Tom Golden. Discussion bulletin board covering wide range of grief topics. Participants are usually bereaved persons.
http://www.webhealing.com/

After-Life Message Board - Administered by the ADC Project, founded by the Guggenheims. Not much traffic on the discussion board. Some portion of the postings are related to bereavement issues.

http://www.pleasant.org/pleasant/sarah/mental/survivor.html

Suicide Survivors mailing list provides an electronic support group for people who have had a family member, close friend, or loved one complete suicide. Membership on the list is open to anyone seeking emotional support regarding the death of someone close to them due to suicide and to people willing to offer support in a non-judgmental manner. The stigma surrounding suicide can make it extremely difficult for survivors to deal with their grief and can cause them also to feel terribly isolated. This list provides one avenue where people can discuss and begin to resolve these feelings in an emotionally supportive environment.
